I flipped that desktop calendar to October and found myself facing the finish line of 2010. Only three more months. Full ones. It’s time for some fourth quarter faithfulness!
In that beautifully familiar passage in Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus exhorts us to do four things: come, take, learn and find.
1. Come – to Him!That’s His invitation to you. Fall’s busy demands push you through the holiday season and then right into the beginning of another new year. If you’re not intentional in making time with Jesus your top priority, everything else will crowd out His presence. How is tent time going? How long has it been since you set aside a Desert Day to spend with Jesus alone? Are you weary as 2010 winds down? Are you heavy hearted? Come to Jesus and let Him give you rest.
2. Take – His yoke! Your Savior lives in you and through you. You don’t work alone. Do you find yourself trying harder to “get it all done” and yet falling further behind? Take Jesus as your yoke-mate. Let Him lead you and empower you. Then the work of your hands will be accomplished not by your might or by your power but by His Spirit.
3. Learn- from Him!Who was your favorite teacher growing up? I’ve had many good teachers – men and women who really cared about me, were creative and engaging and who loved their job. But I’ve never had a teacher like Jesus! He is gentle, and even though He is the Son of God and posesses all authority in Heaven and on earth, He is humble and patient in His approach to my instruction. He models the way as a good Shepherd. Do you have any questions for your teacher, Jesus? What has He been teaching you lately?
4. Find- soul rest!Doesn’t that sound wonderful? As you spend time with Jesus you discover and begin to experience true inward tranquility even as you contine your daily routine. His anchor deep within constantly reminds you, “It is well with my soul.”
Finish strong, friends. One day at a time: come, take, learn and find.
