It’s just about time to start stockpiling your summer reading stash. Kurt and I are actually headed for the beach next week to celebrate our 20th anniversary, so I’ll be digging into my favorite book pile a little early this year. Thought it might be nice to compare suggestions. Though it’s difficult to narrow down the list to only ten, here are my top (10ish) picks from across the genres (in no particular order):
1) Streams in the Desert and Springs in the Valley by Cowman – best devotional reading of all time!
2) C.S. Lewis’ Science Fiction Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Paralendra & That Hideous Strength (Lewis’ unmatched imagination propels me into other-worlds of thought.)
3) Another C.S. Lewis: Till We Have Faces (helped me see my desperate need of the Lord, my own sinfulness)
4) God’s Smuggler about Brother Andrew (FAITH!)
5) A Chance to Die describing the life of Amy Carmichael by Elisabeth Elliot (the life of a disciple)
6) By My Spirit by Jonathan Goforth or How I Know God Answers Prayer by his wife Rosalind Goforth (faith, humility, dependence on the Spirit of God)
7) The Calvary Road and We Would See Jesus by Roy Hession (so convicting and encouraging all at the same time!)
8) A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller (amazing insight into the Shepherd/sheep relationship)
9) Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard (intimacy with Jesus on the journey)
10) Just for fun: any mystery by Agatha Christie (no blood, guts or gore; just great who-dunits?)
I’ve used up 10 already? We’ll have to do this again! Happy reading.
