“But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus.” 2 Corinthians 7:6
As handy and convenient as technology can be, there’s still something very special and significant that happens when we see a person face to face. While Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and other social media can have a unique way to keep us connected, there is nothing more powerful than conversing and being physically with another person.
That principle is what Paul is communicating in 2 Corinthians 7:6. He had not been with Titus for quite some time, and seeing and talking with his young protégé brought great delight, joy and comfort to the persecuted Apostle. Did you ever think that Paul needed encouragement and comfort from others? This giant man of the faith whom God used in an enormous way to proclaim the Gospel and give us much of the New Testament was also a man who needed the presence of others.
As I was reading this verse, it struck me how many people have been a comfort to me and the kids over the past 14 months. So many of you have encouraged and comforted us by your very presence! A warm handshake, a pat on the back, a loving embrace and words of affirmation, peace, and comfort have been a tremendous blessing. Thank you! We are deeply grateful.
Recently I have visited two funeral homes for the visitations of two young people. One man was in his early twenties and the other a teenager. Both of these young people were in a tragic accident, quickly and suddenly gone. There are so many people who need the encouragement of the presence of others.
May I encourage you to continue to keep your eyes open to the lost, downcast, hurting and those grieving. Your presence truly does make a difference!
