November! How did that happen . . . again?
Novembers are for worshipping God in the majesty of His multi-colored creation. They’re for lighting spiced-apple candles, planning Thanksgiving menus and anticipating hugs and conversations with friends and family, some of whom we don’t see year-round. You may be compiling Christmas lists and checking them twice, scouting out bargains, and maybe you’ve even begun your annual letter with or without that family photo. (Send the photos! We love to see your smiling faces.)
For me, November is also all about taking inventory. Looking back. Honestly looking back. Asking the hard questions. How am I more like Jesus than I was last year at this same time? Have I kept seeking Him, knowing Him, loving Him as my top priority?
How about my family? Have I loved and respected Kurt well? Am I his best encourager? Have I discipled my kids – poured into them and equipped them to live fully for the glory of our great God?
While I’m considering what needs to be tweaked and which priorities must be wrestled back into line, I’m also asking, seeking, knocking in expectation of things yet to come. November is a terrific time to peer into the new year, only weeks away.
Right about now, I begin listening closely for His whisper regarding a theme verse that will shape my experience over the course of 365 new days. This particular truth will not just come to rest in short-term memory. No, it will entangle itself with the very threads of my soul, forging a stronger faith and a more obedient heart for my Savior.
2011 has been all about understanding God as my Rock. Psalm 71:3, “Be Thou to me a Rock of habitation to which I may continually come.” He is the firm ground beneath my feet while the world shakes on. Helping friends pray for miracles, grieving with those suffering, mourning through tragedies both close to home and world-wide . . . truly He is the only constant. He is steadfast and immovable, our refuge and a mighty fortress.
Ministry and adventure propelled me around the globe in 2011. Everywhere I traveled I saw God our Rock. Mountains that melt into plains across Africa, jagged islands protruding from churning seas in the Caribbean and majestic peaks that disappear into the heavens in Alaska – all backdrops for meditation on God as my Rock.
Soon it will be time to round the bend and embrace 2012. Always, there’s so much more to know of our matchless Maker. So, I’m listening; searching the Scriptures and expecting the Potter to provide, once again, a truth-tool to shape His little lump of clay.
Want to join me? Wouldn’t it be something to compare “themes.” He speaks so personally. I know He’ll choose one perfectly fit for you, different from mine and from every other child of His.
If the Spirit leads you to zero in with me, please let us know. I’d love to hear how He is speaking to you!
One final thing – Thank YOU, to all who prayed for Further Still on the Just as Joyce show. You are greatly appreciated! Now may the Lord bring the fruit.
