Are you still seeking Him?
This past Christmas season, the American Atheists Group based in New Jersey spent $20,000 to boldly proclaim their message that Christmas is a myth. Their billboard near the Lincoln Tunnel connecting New Jersey to New York displayed a picture of three ancient kings traveling on camels bearing gifts. It read, “You know it’s a myth. This season celebrate reason.”
I’ll give it to them – it’s certainly a creative, catchy little phrase. The problem is, it’s simply not true.
I so badly want to share with their president David Silverman some of the stories I’ve heard from God Seekers in the last two weeks.
- There’s the young wife and mother I had dinner with two weeks ago. She grew up without any spiritual background. She had not one desire in her heart to seek after God. As her sister-in-law began to pray faithfully for her, she grew curious about faith. When she started asking questions which, by the way, is specifically what her sister-in-law had been praying she would do, her sister-in-law took her to visit her church, gave her a Bible and helped her purchase a copy of the God Seeker Bible study in the church book store. Since that day, just over one year ago, her life has literally been and continues to be transformed! She received Christ, was baptized, joined a local church and plugged into a small group of believers for continued discipleship. Her husband who had wandered from his childhood faith is now hungrily seeking God. They explain that their marriage is better because of Christ and their toddler is now learning about Jesus.
- Definitely I would tell Mr. Silverman about the woman I prayed with two days ago. She lost her husband of thirty years to ALS this past spring. Starting over for her involved opening a consignment shop to help pay the bills. During her time of grieving she joined a small group of women studying the life of Moses through the God Seeker. The God Seeker encourages setting up a specific location in your home, called a Tent of Meeting, for the single purpose of spending time seeking after God. Almost unbelievably, on two different occasions, ladies have stopped into her shop looking for a chair or desk and she’s come to find out they are searching for something to use as their Tent of Meeting because they too were studying through the God Seeker! Coincidence? Or is this just one more way the Father is revealing Himself to this precious, grieving daughter. On top of all this, this past weekend her son and his girlfriend came to church with her and made decisions to trust Christ and be baptized.
- I certainly would want to tell about the college student who was desperately seeking God’s help as she battled anorexia. Bumping into her this past week, seeing her beautiful, healthy smile and hearing her talk about the difference God made and continues to make in her life as she spends time in her Tent of Meeting, was pure joy!
God Seekers, let’s talk about reason. Jesus is the Reason and wise men still seek Him.
1 Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (NIV)
Father, right now in Jesus’ Name, we join together to pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit you would open darkened eyes to see Truth. We pray specifically for David Silverman and the American Atheist organization. Please be as gracious with them as you have been with each of us to reveal Yourself to them in personal ways, to draw them to Yourself and to cause them to seek after You. Forgive us, Your people, for the many ways we have misrepresented You and lived lives filled with sin and apathy causing many to doubt who You are. Help us be ready always to give an answer for the reason of the hope you have given us in Jesus. In Jesus powerful name we pray, Amen.
